A rainy weekend in Ireland

You don’t come to Ireland for the summer weather.  We’ve had a fair bit of rain over the past few weeks, but Saturday was out of the ordinary with heavy rain falling for much of the day.  In Belfast a brand new road underpass got its first serious weather test and failed rather badly.  It is tempting to wonder if someone forgot to include a drainage system, because the underpass just filled up with 20 feet of water!  Maybe we now know how it managed to get finished ahead of schedule.  In actual fact what seems to have happened is that a pumping station in the area became overwhelmed by the overflow of a river.  News reports suggest that there may have been half a dozen cars submerged after being abandoned as the waters rose.
