Traveling East and a Silver Wedding anniversary

Yesterday Pauline and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary: in Bangkok.  I don’t think anyone would have predicted that location 25 years ago.  We wouldn’t have predicted it 2 weeks ago.
Last weekend our daughter who is working for the year in SE Asia developed acute appendicitis and had to be flown to Bangkok for surgery.  [...]

Rathlin Island

All four of us were off today and we decided to take a day trip to Rathlin Island – a place we had never been before.  Rathlin is a boot shaped island with around 100 residents, situated just off Ballycastle, on the North Coast of Northern Ireland.  A ferry service bridges the 6 miles of [...]

Happy birthday Claire-Lise

It’s not just Saint Patrick’s Day today, it’s Claire-Lise’s birthday.  I can still remember driving home from the hospital in Nyon, Switzerland, after she was born; today we celebrated her 18th birthday.
Many happy returns to a great young woman!

Happy Birthday, Pauline

Today is Pauline’s birthday.  I am reminded of Proverbs 31 and its portrayal of an excellent wife.  The end of the chapter talks about how her works may praise her in the gates.
If “the gates” refers to the city gates where public life happened and business got done, I suppose the Internet is a form [...]

Happy birthday to Claire-Lise

Claire-Lise is seventeen today.  She shares her birthday with St Patrick – or at least her birthday is on the same day that people celebrate him.  She sees and hears enough of me not to need to read this blog, but Happy Birthday anyway.

Anniversary weekend at Westlake

We got home this evening from our weekend back in Switzerland. The event was the 20th anniversary of Westlake Church where we worked for 17 years. Saturday evening was a celebration meal which included a look back at the past in a number of ways. We talked about how we had come [...]

Twenty years (almost)

Yesterday Gemma, my oldest daughter went off to university in Belfast. It’s not that far away, so her leaving is nothing as dramatic as it would have been had we still been in Switzerland. Just after she walked out of the door and went to the car, I thought how I could still [...]

Hawaii

Jet lag has kicked in! Despite the little blue tablets that are supposed to make it go away, we’ve been awake early this morning. So a chance to write about our trip to Hawaii. Actually, our trip to O’Ahu, the island where Honolulu sits. Geographically, it is not the same as [...]

Castleward – the metaphor of an unhappy home

Next weekend I will be officiating at a wedding in South Dakota. I have an illustration that I like to include in the message I give at weddings.
About 30 miles from Belfast, Northern Ireland, close to
the shore of Strangford Lough, is a stately home that tourists can
visit called Castleward. The house was built in [...]
