Slumdog Millionaire

I eventually made it to see Slumdog Millionaire this week.  I’m not sure how many Oscar-dominating movies I have watched, and I haven’t seen any of the other contenders from this year, but Slumdog is an amazing achievement.  It’s the story of a young man (Jamal) who grew up in the slums (hence the title) [...]

Australia

Part of Pauline’s birthday treat (after dinner at Table Table) was the movie, Australia.  Earlier in the week I had seen a story about how Nicole Kidman, the female star of the movie, had been reported as not enjoying it: you wonder how the rest of us will fare!  (She has disputed the interpretation of [...]

24: Redemption

Redemption is the title of a TV movie made to bridge the gap between series 6 and series 7 of the hugely popular “24” dramas.  The story involves a developing conspiracy in Washington on the day of a new president’s inauguration and a developing coup in a fictional African state where Jack Bauer happens to [...]

“Four Christmases” and a plea

Pauline, Claire-Lise and I went to watch this season’s big box office hit this week – Four Christmases.  It’s the story of a couple (not married – of course, that’s how it is in the movies these days) who have traditionally spun a series of clever lies at Christmas to avoid spending time with their [...]

Faith like potatoes

Someone gave me the DVD of this story (there is also a book) and we watched it this week.  It is the true story of Angus Buchan, a farmer of Scottish descent who settles in South Africa.  As his life hits a major crisis point he is invited to a church service where God speaks [...]

Chariots of fire

I’ve just been watching Chariots of Fire (again).  It is truly a wonderful film.  Great story telling with a brilliant juxtaposition of two great athletes – Eric Liddell who runs for the glory of God (“I feel his pleasure”) and Harold Abrahams who has ten seconds to justify his existence.

“Elizabeth” and Protestantism

At the weekend we watched the recently released film Elizabeth which is set at the time of the Spanish Armada. There has been criticism of the film from some Catholic writers who see it as anti-Catholic and, more broadly, part of a movement to de-Christianise Europe.
I actually wondered about its portrayal of Protestantism. [...]

Amazing Grace in the Life of William Wilberforce

A couple of days ago our family watched (some of us had seen it once before) the story of William Wilberforce, as told in the film Amazing Grace.
John Piper has written a short biography of Wilberforce which is available as a pdf file here, or which you can get on Amazon (follow the link).

Amazing Grace: The Movie

During our trip to Ireland this past week, we had the opportunity to watch the Amazing Grace film. It’s the story of William Wilberforce and his campaign for the abolition of slavery – a campaign that was perseverance against all the odds. The story is very well told, the hymn is sung a [...]
